Overview
A very particular church in Pietraperzia is the Sanctuary of Maria Santissima della Cava, the historical origin is connected to the Holy Image, venerated here.
The image was found before 1223 by a silent man from Trapani, who, having gone near Pietraperzia, excavated and found the Holy Effigy, and immediately obtained the word; from that moment the “Runzi” district was called “Maria Santissima della Cava”.
The sacred image was placed inside the church and was incorporated into the front wall; the church with the miraculous image has become the destination of continuous pilgrimages; especially in the month of May, every day people go to the Madonna on foot as a sign of devotion for the graces obtained.
The church in Pietraperzia in its present situation was built at the end of the 1600s and renovated with the offerings of the faithful. On the altar stands the image of the Madonna, consisting of a stone wall in which Maria Santissima della Cava is painted, nursing the Child Jesus.
