The imposing building dates back to the mid-thirteenth century. During the sixteenth century it became an important military stronghold, but the current configuration is largely due to the restructuring of the nineteenth century which adapted the building to the neo-Gothic taste of the time.
The building has a quadrangular plan surrounded by four circular towers. The east facade still retains many Baroque elements, on the west side there is still the drawbridge, the pointed windows and the Guelph battlements. From the staircase of the northern facade you can enjoy the panorama of the large park surrounding the castle.
On the last Sunday of May the castle hosts the Barbera DOC auction.
Costigliole d'Asti (Costiòle d'Ast in Piedmontese) has a population of 5,981 in the province of Asti, in southern Piedmont. It extends for about 35 km2 on the border between Monferrato and Langhe. The toponym derives from Corte Costeliolae and then Costigliolis but, since there are no precise writings, it is presumed that the name owes its position (on a coast) and to an arboreal essence widespread in the area, the lime tree. Thus described the locality Gian Secondo De Canis in Astigiana Chorography (II, 44 v. Asti 1815).

Costigliole lies on the back and around a conical-shaped hill, on whose summit stands the massive square castle in excellent condition, flanked by four large round towers.
