Welcome to Torre Albineta
Situated in the Pollino National Park
about one hour away from
Matera, the
film location of Mel Gibson's "The Passion of The Christ", Torre Albineta, a stately yet charming 17th century manor-house and farm
with its chapel on a hill, vineyards, olive groves, and wheat fields sprawls over 1200 acres
of pastoral Italian hills. The manor graces a hill-top which
imbues
you with panoramic views of the high Park mountains and hill-top country
villages. With its twin towers, it is a wonderful
example of an Italian fortified home constructed on a dominant hill as protection against
brigantine roving bands.
The house is wonderfully conserved and truly reflects a historic
manor on a large working farm. On the ground floor is a unique
cobble-stoned indoor courtyard adorned with rows of saddles, a massive
mill-stone, and antique farm tools; a beamed ceiling billiard room; a
games room with a huge stone fireplace (one of six working fireplaces),
and large kitchen. Situated in the corner is the property manager's
living quarters.
At the top of a broad stone-stairway is the main
living area which exudes the history of Baron Fabrizio di Giura's family -
including Italy's first prime minister. There is a living room, library, dining room, sitting room, four bedrooms , and four bathrooms.
The only concessions to modernity are central heating and bathrooms.
Climb up the hill beside the house
and visit the family chapel - the site of the family's happiest and
saddest moments. Perhaps say a prayer then wander hill and dale; see
deserted and ancient tenant farm houses --and then just wander and wander
and wander.
