Marriage Laws for Italy Weddings
There are four sets of marriage laws for weddings
in Italy:
-
Marriage laws of your country of origin.
These describe what must be done to gain approval from your home
country to get married in Italy. We have
these spelled out in our
wedding regulations page for the most popular countries we
deal with. Other nationals must talk to their embassy or
consulate in Italy to get these marriage laws defined.
-
National marriage laws of Italy.
These are laws that apply to all marriages. The main
law to note is that each one of the couple must obtain a
Nulla Osta ( a certificate that says there is no impediment to
the individual being married). Again this is
described in our wedding
regulations page.
-
Local marriage laws. Each town
hall sets their own regulations. For example, most mayors
will insist that the wedding only takes place in the town hall
(as decreed by national laws); however, some (e.g., some
of the mayors that we deal with) will allow the recitation of
the legal part of the marriage ceremony and the paperwork
signing to be done informally in the town hall with just
the bride & groom present. This is followed by
a full wedding ceremony at any other venue with all guests, but
with most of legal jargon stripped out. Some mayors will
insist in a minimum stay for the couple prior to the marriage in
Italy.
-
Religious Marriage Laws /Regulations for
Religious Weddings in Italy - These vary widely.

Laws",
Non-Catholic Marriage Laws.
